81, 82, 83, 84... Early drawings and prints.
It's potentially interesting to see an artist's early work...
These drawings and prints were all made through my years at art college and immediately prior to the Darlington Residency 're-learning / de-learning' experience.
Cheltenham, Chelsea and Sunderland!
As is the norm in your 'formative years' I was hugely influenced by the work of other artists, almost to the point of plagiarism or perhaps as a naive homage.
Ben Nicholson, Max Beckmann and William Scott loomed large.
Quirky still lifes...
During my degree I also found out that I was colour blind... So it's no coincidence that everything is either monochromatic or very high key colour!
And to be honest, there isn't much more to add.
Art college was pretty academic and, in retrospect, rather lacking in context and concepts.
It seems quite amazing when I think back now (and also a little embarrassing) that whilst Brixton, Toxteth and Bristol rioted, and the awful 80's and Thatcherism kicked in, none of that filtered through to the hallowed studios of the art college.
But, I have a bit of a soft spot for these pieces... and the more I look the more I see.
Phallic imagery, suggestions of things hidden in the shadows... And actually there is one drawing of two cages, which could well be quite significant!
